Protect Your Eyes from Harmful UV Rays in 3 Simple Steps
Too much sun exposure can harm your eyes, just like it can harm your skin. Exposure to UV rays can leave you with eye conditions like pterygia and cataracts, not to mention vision loss. No matter how old you are, it's important to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays in addition to getting an annual or biannual vision exam with your eye doctor. At Urias Eyecare, here's how we recommend that Midland residents protect their eyes from sun damage year-round.
1. Know When the Risk of UV Damage Is Highest
Bright, sunny days carry the highest risk of UV damage. Reflective surfaces like snow and water can magnify the effect of the sun. Avoid going outside during the brightest part of the day, and if you are going to be exposed to bright sunlight for more than a few minutes, grab your sunglasses before you head out the door.
A wide-brimmed hat can be a big help in keeping the sun off your face and out of your eyes. If you don't have a hat, staying in a shady area will help keep UV rays off your face.
Not all sunglasses come with UV protection, so be sure that you've got a pair that is actually designed to keep your eyes safe. A good pair of sunglasses protects against both UV-A and UV-B rays. You'll get the best protection if you choose a pair that wraps around your face.
If you need to have an eye exam or you're looking for help managing a chronic condition such as dry eye, our Midland optometrist can help. Call Urias Eyecare today at 432-368-4102 to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor at our clinic.
