What Causes It?

Staring at your digital screen or computer makes your eyes work even harder, which causes high visual demands that can ultimately result in vision problems and headaches. Staring at your computer screen is not the same as staring at a printed page because of the light coming from the device.

Are There Symptoms?

There are multiple symptoms of CVS, which can include:

  • Dry eye
  • Headaches
  • Eyestrain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Blurred vision

Symptoms will vary depending on the individual, how much time they spend on the computer, and his eye conditions, such as having astigmatism or farsightedness.

How Do I Get Diagnosed?

If you're experiencing any of the above symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with our local optometrist in Midland, TX. You'll receive an evaluation where you can discuss any symptoms, like dry eye, headaches, or eye irritation, to determine if you do have computer vision syndrome.

How to Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome?

Many office workers spend eight to ten hours each day sitting at the computer, causing them to experience eye irritation, headaches, and even dry eye. It is sometimes recommended to follow the 20-20-20 rule, taking a 20-second break to look at something at least 20 feet away every 20 minutes.

How Do I Treat It?

You can help treat the problem in several ways, usually through changing your screen time habits. It also possible that CVS is not the cause of your symptoms but a refractive error is. Depending on the severity of it, you may be required to wear prescription glasses while on the computer. If you're already wearing glasses, you may need a new prescription.
