It’s important to prepare yourself for an eye exam to maximize its effectiveness. At Urias Eyecare, we provide eye care services that help to keep your vision in great shape even for years to come. We are an optometry practice serving Midland, Odessa, and Andrews. Read on to learn more about how to prepare for your eye exam.

What Happens During an Eye Exam and What Tests Are Conducted?

The first part of the eye exam is a general health check where our optometrist will look at your eye and its surrounding tissues. The second part of the exam is a more thorough assessment of your eyesight in a separate room with special equipment. Your eyes will be dilated so that your pupil size can be measured accurately by shining light into your eyes. Some other tests may include visual acuity, eye focusing/vergence, depth perception, eye teaming, and visual field.

Preparing for an Eye Exam

Here are some tips to help ensure nothing gets overlooked during your visit:

  1. Have a list of all medications you're currently taking, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Certain medications make you more susceptible to visual impairment.
  2. Write down any health concerns you have, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. The information helps our eye doctor during the diagnostic process.
  3. Keep a log of the eye problems you've experienced, including any headaches or blurred vision, along with information about when they happen and how long they last.
  4. Bring along any visual aids that help you see, such as glasses or magnifiers. This allows the eye doctor to assess your current prescription and make adjustments as needed.
  5. Write down your complete medical history and list any allergies you may have. Ask your family about their eye health history because conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts are hereditary
  6. Make a list of any other questions you would like to ask our optometrist.
